Insect Identification

For insect identification requests, Orange County residents must complete the insect identification form either prior to dropping off the specimen or at the District at the time of drop off.  Specimens may be dropped off at the District office or mailed in.

Insect Identification Form

The smaller the bug fragments, the more difficult it is to identify what the fragments once were. Follow these steps to ensure your insect is delivered in good condition:

  1. Do NOT bring or send live specimens.
  2. Pack dead insects in a sealed plastic bag, inside a small box to protect from smashing.
  3. Insects can be placed in a watertight container with rubbing alcohol to preserve the specimen.

Once the specimen is received, please allow 5-7 business days for staff to process and identify the sample.

Please note the District will not accept any samples that contain bodily fluid.
